Czech doctors from IKEM have performed a unique European operation. They transplanted five organs - stomach, pancreas, spleen, liver and small intestine, to sixty-year-old man. Small intestine for the first time ever. The whole operation took two teams of ten hours.
The patient's condition is after life-saving operation stable, not yet won. ‘The situation may change at any time’, said the doctors at a press conference today.
Doctors diagnosed patient five years ago with cirrhosis of the liver, caused by autoimmune disease. Two years ago, his condition began to deteriorate sharply; even ordinary walk was difficult for him. Several times a week doctors had to remove fluid from the abdominal cavity, which was formed there. In the last year his condition deteriorated, he was ranked among the candidate for a liver transplant.
The following examination showed that his new liver alone would not solve the state. Doctors have therefore decided to include the so-called multivisceral transplant. The patient was only a few months of live.
