Prague Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine was the first center in the world that used an absolute novelty among heart pumps HeartMate PHP (Percutaneous Heart Pump) to save life of a patient with acute heart failure.

Doctors of IKEM are actively involved in its development within international study. This type of cardiac support is introduced directly into heart via a catheter through a blood vessel in the groin. HeartMate PHP can currently completely replace the function of his own heart for 72 hours and therefore gives time to doctors for more accurate decisions about further treatment, even about the most complicated patients. Thus, IKEM has successfully bridged to other form of treatment for four patients.

Absolute novelty, in a global scale, is now the implantation of the heart pump HeartMate PHP. ‘This is a totally unique and new type of short-term cardiac support which is introduced into patient’s heart with acute heart failure with the help of catheter through a small incision into an artery in the groin – it is a very fast and efficient stabilization of the patient, especially suitable for patients with cardiogenic shock’, says docent MUDr. Jiří Kettner, CSc., representative of the Head of Cardiology of IKEM.
